A Barsoom Landscape

Description

18x24" 45x60cm acrylic on hardboard

It's almost 50 years since I first read A Princess of Mars as a young teen, the perfect time of life to read it: imagination running on all eight cylinders and a vast naivete. I've reread it perhaps half a dozen times since, but I always have to turn a blind eye to the elements I wish it would have had, things a naive imagination can no longer provide. I haven't seen the movie, John Carter, and I'm not sure I will: movies of favorite books are pretty iffy things, but I wish it well. I never thought they'd make it. I guess the people who did love the book as much as I, but then, it has to go through Hollywood, and Hollywood usually makes crap of everything... Anyways, Utah is not Barsoom, so I thought I'd try painting what Barsoom, at least its dead sea bottoms really look like. I wanted a sweeping scale and I wanted to avoid details that are best left to the imagination, and hoped to produce something just a litte off kilter to suggest that this is not earth...

I just finished reading Princess of Mars. (Superb!) This actually looks like the landscape described in the book. The film came nowhere near. Good to be taken back to Barsoom again.
